ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM with JOE FELBER: W2 with Joe Felber
This is a 6 week course, running on Wednesday evenings.
COURSE OUTLINE
Abstract Expressionism is a post–World War II art movement that emerged in the United States—especially New York—in the late 1940s and 1950s. It’s less about depicting the world and more about expressing inner states: emotion, gesture, energy, and the act of painting itself. There are no recognisable clear figures or scenes, but visible brushstrokes, drips, splatters—movement matters. Abstract art, with its emphasis on freedom of expression and creativity, holds a special place in the world of art education. Unlike traditional art forms that often require adherence to specific rules and techniques, abstract art gives art teachers the freedom to encourage students to explore their emotions, thoughts, and perceptions in a visually expressive way.
Embracing The Freedom Of Abstract Art – One of my favourite aspects of teaching abstract art is that it can strongly encourage students to let go of their fear of making mistakes. When there is no ‘visual comparison’, I find that students have nothing to measure their work against. Comparison is one enemy to an individual’s capacity for expression.
Week 1-2: Planning And Preparing For Abstract Art – Looking at noted Abstract artists and some of their works
CONCEPTS: THE PRINCIPLES or ELEMENTS. Focusing on the principles of design and/or elements of art, and translating them to the process of creating your specific project. You will produce your own painting
Week 3 – 4: TECHNIQUES: THE PROCESS – The skills and tips for using the chosen medium in the process of creating the resulting product/project. You will produce your own painting.
Week 5-6: MIXED MEDIA- WHAT IS IT? When I think of Mixed Media, I basically consider it a catchall for anything that doesn’t really fit into the traditional art genres, e.g. collage. You will produce your own painting.
