ESSENTIAL DRAWING TECHNIQUES with ALEX BECKINSALE: T1 with Alex Beckinsale

This is a 6 week course, running on Thursday mornings.

Artist Statement

Alex is an early career artist whose work is inspired by strange narratives, folklore, and popular culture. Her practice primarily focuses on utilising both digital and traditional drawing to represent the human figure. She works both from live models and photographs as references to create her drawings. Alex spends her time between her home studio and teaching art workshops for teens and adults around South Australia. Alex graduated with Honours from the Adelaide Central School of Art in 2016 and is now an experienced and very popular tutor there. Her teaching is valuable for beginners and the more experienced alike.

Course Description:
Discover the joy of drawing in this engaging 6-week course designed for beginners and those looking to refresh their skills. Explore a variety of sketching techniques, experiment with different materials, and embrace creative approaches to capturing the world around you. Whether you’re interpreting objects, people, animals or daily life, this course makes drawing a fun and dynamic way to see and record your surroundings. Perfect for anyone eager to unlock their artistic potential!

Materials.
WEEK 1: Graphite pencils, ranging from HB to 6B (softer grades 8B – 12B are optional); Erasers: both a hard and kneadable eraser; A3 Sketchbook (avoid Mont Martre, ALDI, KMart books as the paper makes it difficult to layer pencil; Ballpoint pen; Basic Coloured pencil set.
WEEK 2: Same as Week 1 plus willow charcoal.
WEEK 3: Same as Weeks 1 and 2 plus: Ink (black or sepia); Soft brushes; Ink pen.
WEEKS 4 – 6. Same as above.

Course Schedule
WEEK 1: Introductory week. Feeling comfortable with materials and drawing concepts. How to shade from references and imagination; intro to negative shapes; how to break down complex objects into basic shapes.
WEEK 2: Different techniques to use for drawing. Hatching; stippling; fluid line work; continuous line; simplification into symbols.
WEEK 3: Using line: Warm up drawings using some different materials that produce line; A longer drawing utilising pen and ink.
WEEK 4: Using tone: Warm up drawings using different tonal techniques; one longer drawing.
WEEK 5: Master Study. Full session doing a master study.
WEEK 6: Final drawing week. Continue on from last week and/or draw from reference photos.
