Expressive Landscapes – W6 – NOW FULL with Dr Daniel Connell

This is a six week course for the Beginner to Advanced painter.

Dr Daniel Connell is a lecturer in painting and drawing at the Adelaide Central School of Art. Daniel was awarded a PhD from the University of South Australia in 2020. His research explores portraiture as a socially engaged practice. His work has been selected for the Lester Prize, the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, Fleurieu Art Prize and the Kochi Muziris Biennale of Contemporary Art in India. He has worked on public art projects both nationally and in Birmingham, Vancouver and throughout India. Daniel has delivered a TEDX talk ‘How art teaches you to approach the unfamiliar” in Ubud in May 2018. This course is designed for those who want to create paintings in the tradition of landscape but experiment with various techniques and find a unique expressive voice of their own. Designed for raw beginners and advanced.
Students will look at other artists who have painted landscapes in a broadly expressive way and discuss the significance of representing space and our relationship to it.
Students are encouraged to paint large-scale and multiple works

Materials

Supports:

  • 2 x oil sheet paper.
  • 2-3 student quality stretched canvas or primed mdf board (buy at hardware at least 5mm thick and prime at home using matte ceiling white paint. )
  • Suggested large scale,  with at least one dimension being 100 cm or larger.

Acrylic paint, Student quality is fine:

  • Alizarin
  • Warm red
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Pthalo blue
  • Lemon yellow
  • Warm yellow

Suggestions:

  • Turquoise
  • Orange or vermillion
  • Magenta
  • Lilac

Brushes

An assortment of brushes. Suggestions are:

  • At least 2-3 high quality synthetic bristle brushes.
  • I suggest ‘brights’ ( square shaped bristles)
  • Sized 4,8,12
  • Cheaper larger brushes
  • 3 inches and larger Are handy.

Other materials:

  • Natural Charcoal 3-4 sticks any size
  • Cotton rags.
  • Pallete – any water-repellent, portable flat surface
  • Jars /containers for water.
  • Oil paints may be used in addition to acrylic – (on top of ) but only with non-toxic solvent (Langridge Low Toxic Solvent or Langridge Solvent 75 recommended).
