Expressive portrait painting allows participants to explore portraiture from a non-realist tradition in which character and feeling come to the fore. Participants will work ‘Alla-Prima’ (in one sitting) during the first week, and then work on individual projects from source photos to create a single or multiple resolved work, over the following 5 weeks. Participants will be encouraged to work on large supports, to research artists, and experiment with various painting techniques and media. Learning will cover painting and material techniques, the structure of the face, the nature and ethics of portraiture and representation, considerations of paintings, composition and taking source photographs.
