LINO CUT with HANAH WILLIAMS: T4 with Hanah Williams

This is a 6 week course, running on Thursday mornings.

Course Description

In this hands-on short course, you’ll be introduced to a range of relief printmaking techniques. You’ll learn how to design, carve, and print a series of Ezy-Carve and lino blocks by hand onto both paper and fabric.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore the full creative process — from developing your initial design to carving your block and producing a small edition of finished prints. You’ll gain practical skills in hand-printing techniques, inking methods, and editioning your work with confidence.

By the end of the course, you’ll take home your own prints along with the knowledge and skills to continue carving and printing independently in your own studio.
This printmaking course is eco-friendly and uses solvent-free materials, making it both artistically rewarding and environmentally conscious.

Course Materials

Linocut Tools (1 pack per person) https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/search/?q=Jackson%27s+%3A+Woodcut+Tools+%3A+Set+of+8 This set is unique in that it includes 3 sizes of each tool. For those wanting to do finer work I can recommend other tools that can be purchased individually such as the Hwahong ’V’ tools https://www.arttoart.net/products/hwahong-v-relief-carving-tools
Ezy-carve (1x 14x21cm for 2 people/ can be cut in half and it is double sided) (Art to Art, Eckersleys or Spotlight)
Lino 30x30cm can be cut into 9 pieces 10x10cm squares (Art to Art, Eckersleys or online) we will use this as a test block and then people can choose which size they’d like to move up to. The 30x30cm also cuts nicely into four 15x15cm pieces
Fabriano Unica printmaking paper (Jacksons Art supplies UK or Melbourne Etching Supplies. Paper packs go on sale end of financial year and are usually 30% off. Can also purchase individually. We can also look at other papers too such as Awagami Hosho as this is easier to hand print onto.
A4 or A3 photocopy paper for testing
Coloured cartridge paper for printing onto* some people like to have this option (can be discussed further)
A few metres of calico* another option for anyone wanting to print on fabric
Cranfield relief printing ink (Jackson’s Art Supplies UK or Art to Art) excellent palette and come in tubes https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/cranfield-traditional-relief-ink this one is clean up with vegetable oil OR this one is clean up with soap and water https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/cranfield-caligo-safe-wash-relief-ink
Another option is Gamblin Relief Ink from (Art to Art) https://www.arttoart.net/products/gamblin-relief-printing-ink
Vegetable oil or dishwashing liquid depending on chosen ink*
All the inks can be mixed and lightened/darkened. The Cranfield range is really great and doesn’t dry out in the tube. I’ve found that having a kit with red, yellow, phthalo green, ultramarine, pink, violet, black and white has worked well. The range also has metallics.
