This is a 6 week course.

Artist Statement
Jess is an Adelaide based realist drawer/ painter exploring ideas of Identity, place and draws inspiration from her everyday surroundings. She is a lecturer at Adelaide Central School of Art and teaches in both the drawing and painting departments.
Jess completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts (honours) at Adelaide Central School of Art in 2006 and has been actively exhibiting since. Her solo exhibitions include Bundle at Praxis Art Space, These Four Walls at Floating Goose Studios Inc, and Some Place Near at Hill Smith Gallery. She has been curated into numerous group exhibitions.
She has been a finalist in the Royal South Australian Society of Arts- Portrait Prize, The Prospect Portrait Prize and the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Prize, The Advertiser Contemporary Art Prize and The Center for Creative Health Art Prize. In 2019 she was awarded the People’s Choice Award at the Kennedy Art Prize for her painting Embrace (Self Portrait with Son).

Course description
This course Is suitable for those with some drawing experience.
Find beauty in the everyday as we delve into domestic interiors. Jess will guide participants through a series of short, focused exercises on the use of tone, coloured grounds, and composition. Proceeding this, participants will complete exercises looking at colour mixing and relationships. Participants will develop a three- four lesson soft pastel domestic interior work in the final weeks creating an opportunity to refine and develop a work.
Jess will provide all domestic interior source imagery to work from.

Material List
• 3 pieces of thin willow charcoal
• Charcoal pencil
• White conte stick
• Cotton rag
• Hard plastic eraser or eraser pencil
• masking tape (Low tack ideal)
• Light dust mask
• Paper stump or cotton buds (optional)
• Baby wipes (optional for cleaning hands)

• A limited selection of soft pastels will be required for this course. The colours required are the same as those used in previous pastel courses with Jess. The pastel colours will be discussed in the first class. Three package options will be available for participants to purchase if required. These will include a selection of soft pastels and /or 2 x pieces of A3 Coloured Canson Mi- Teintes paper.

There will be a fee between $5- $48 for the soft pastel and/ or paper. They will be sourced ready for use in lesson 2. If participants already have soft pastels and or A3 toned pastel paper, they can bring these to the first lesson to discuss.

Materials needed for the first class: 2 sticks of thin willow charcoal, eraser or eraser pencil, white conte stick or conte pencil, masking tape. A piece of A4 toned paper will be supplied for the first week.
